Keeping Your Home Cool When It Needs to Be

When you have any sort of air conditioning unit (central air or window units), you are likely trying to figure out how to keep your home as cool as it can be. Other than calling in air conditioning repair to do an inspection before you start using your AC every year, how can you make sure to save some money on the process?

Ceiling fan

Use fans and windows for cooler days. Fewer days with the A/C on equals less money out of your pocket. Install a Ceiling fan and use those fans to keep things comfortable.

Watch the natural lighting. Natural lighting is great, because it saves on your electric costs, unless the sun is bringing more heat into your house, which will raise your heating costs. There’s a special reflective film that you can get for your windows in order to still get that natural light while still allowing your home to stay as cool as it can.

Stop switching the settings! Leave the A/C at one temperature, because it takes more energy to re-regulate than it does for you to hang in there until it cools down a little bit.

Fix the leaks. If you have leaks, the air conditioning unit will try and regulate the temperature according to those instead of by the actual temperature inside your house, thus upping your cooling costs. Find the leaks and make sure that they are taken care of the right way.

These are just a few tips to keep your cooling costs down. Of course, you can always spend a little more and get energy efficient air conditioning units, but if yours were given to you, you don’t have much of a choice. So, do what you can, including following these tips. Stay cool, spend smart, and save smart!
